- Lecturer in Journalism / Media

My research interests focus on the mass media and audience analysis. I examine the communicative rationality, information flow, digital divides, discourses and the news media influences on the public sphere. Global communication paradigms, mediations and geo political impacts are monitored as the key elements for my research. I am keenly interested in doing comparative analysis and studies on news media in relation to globalization, cultural transition, identity, nationalism, diasporas, ethnicity, development communications, gender, ethics and convergence.

I have ten years of under graduate and masters degree teaching experience in the discipline of Journalism, Media and Communication. I began my academic career in teaching and research at the School of Communication and Information Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University in India in 2000-2001, and also lectured in Kannur University, University of Kerala. My research during that period was focused on public service broadcasting, foreign direct investment in Indian media, communication and media policies of the Government of India under the ‘Prasar Bharathi Corporation’, news production, distribution and consumption patterns in SAARC countries, and public communication campaigns. My M.Phil Degree dissertation analyses the effects and impacts of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on the Indian news media and the license- privatization - liberalization policy of the Indian news media industry. My Doctoral Degree (PhD) thesis investigated the communicative and representative aspects of Political slogans in India with special emphasis on ‘public sphere’ formation and ‘civil societies’ through news media and its ‘communicative rationalities’.

Prior to joining Monash University, I was lecturing in the Department of Mass Communication at the Curtin University of Technology, Miri campus. On my association with the Curtin University of Technology, Miri campus I had undertaken a major research project on “Young people and news media literacy”, and had successfully completed it. Currently I am accredited as the research supervisor in Monash University for the Higher Research Degree. As I am supervising Masters Degree and PhD students for their research dissertations, I am familiar with a wide range of research design and methodology, and have previously engaged in effects and impact studies on media product and media groups. As a lecturer I have been involved in a wide range of units related to  global journalism, international communication flows, television studies,  journalism/ media ethics and practices, audience analysis and media texts.

As a socially committed and responsible academic in the disciple of Mass Communication / Media / Journalism my research interest are in the following area:
a)

Information Technology and Development Communications
b)      Nationalism, Identity and Mass Media
c)      Journalism Practices, News Business and Audience Studies
d)      Mass Media in Developing Countries and Cultural Transition
e)

Media Ethics and Global Journalism / Communication Paradigms
f)       News Business, production, distribution and consumption
g)

Media reach, access, effects and impacts
h)

Newsroom practices, ethics and gender.

My research aim and goal is to provide the community with a better state of communicative rationality and free flow of information. The communicative rationality, free flow information, minimal digital divide, freedom to communicate and express will help this world to form a public sphere through civil societies. After the completion of PhD. Degree and the regular teaching I had initiated the process of research publications in the international research journals.

My current research interests focus on studying the democratization process in the Asian continent and the role of the News Media in raising a responsible citizenry. I am trained and experienced as a journalist; I was employed both in the electronic and print news media for seven years. Employed as a professional journalist in Doordarshan, NDTV, All India Radio, NTV, Asianet News, Hindu Business line, Madhyamam daily.

I have been the recipient for the Thomson Foundation (UK) & Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Fellowship for the studies in Television Journalism. I received the University of Kerala Gold Medal for the meritorious Post Graduate Studies. Awarded the National Merit scholarship by the Ministry of Human resources from the Government of India and qualified the UGC (NET & JRF) fellowship for the Ph.D. doctoral research in Mass Communication & Journalism.
